can anyone tell me if my wd passport is working?

Jun 7, 2012 5:21AM PDT

i am using a wd passport external hd and just recently i accidentally dropped it from my table and later when i plugged it to my pc there was an error message that the drivers for this hardware were not installed succesfully...i knew i had to install the wd ses device driver but in a hurry i unplugged the device from my pc without safely removing it...and now when i connect it again the device is not even detected...i listened closely to see if the platters are spinning, my external drive tries to start but four clicks later it stops spinning. Is my ext drive corrupt?(forgive me if i am not using the correct tech terms but will greatly appreciate any help)

Try another cable and enclosure and hope your backup copies are fine.

Other than what Robert has suggested, its already too late. If you now want a recovery of your data, then you know why it's often mentioned to have "back-ups". Too often users use an ext. HD as THE back-up and at best its only a temporary one, so back-up to yet another ext. HD or CD/DVD/BD discs is recommended, you may include flash drives as well. As for date recovery services, if your data is "priceless" then cost of the service is worth it, otherwise a lesson learned. Take my advise any other method or repeated attempts to recover may only further corrupt or seal the fate of a good solid recovery other than the service. However, you may contact WD and if you have warranty use that to replace/repair your ext. HD. Please review this forum(forums) on attempts for data recovery from ext. HDs.
