Question

Can anyone help me get rid of text data following my curser.

Apr 23, 2012 8:13PM PDT

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">On my iMac7 I have just found an issue with an image following my curser all over the screen. It looks like 7 columns of 4 lines of 1 point bitmap text. I have zapped the P ram, repaired disc permissions, tried different mice, searched the net for info and all without success. It seems to have happened after I tried MacKeeper and OnyX to tidy up the OS. OnyX is new to me so could this have altered spmehting. Has anyone else had this problem?

Answer
For the record

For the record, programs like Onyx are NOT meant to be general use tools. They are scalpels not shotguns, intended for very precise and targeted operations initiated by people who know the full implications of what they are doing; not just point it in the general direction of something and hope for the best. The same goes for similar tools on Windows, like CCleaner.

When used as some kind of panacea tool, they very often cause problems like you are experiencing, and there's at least a decent chance you are looking at an OS reinstall. However, you neglected to mention what OS you were running, but assuming it's 10.5 or later, and you have Time Machine set up, what happens if you just restore back to say yesterday or some point BEFORE you ran Onyx?

Unfortunately, Time Machine does not work like that.

It will not Restore the System, just individual files and folders

Something like System Restore Points on Windows would be a handy tool

Sounds like the way to go.

I will try Time Machine (TM) before I do an OS upgrade this weekend. Am on <span id="INSERTION_MARKER">10.6.8 at the mo. I think what I did in OnYx was go a little bit further in my cleaning up the system than usual and thats where the prob started. Prob deleted a bit to much or put something on that was unnecessary. Outside of my comfort zone, a little ignorance got me in trouble. Just a thought. Will restoring just the system folder from TM before the problem work? Thanx for your comments. Appreciated. Will post an answer when sorted.

(NT) You may want to consider leaving the Visual editor OFF.
