Can an iPad store, view, edit, and create MS Word documents?

Jul 12, 2013 8:57AM PDT
Question: Can an iPad store, view, edit, and create Microsoft Word documents?

I am an on-call coordinator and work 7 days per week for a medical
agency. They are giving me an iPad to carry around. Can I transfer
my Word docs from my laptop to the iPad, to view the docs and also
edit and create new Word documents? Also, is there a connecting
cable I can use from my laptop to the iPad to transfer all the
Word files? Please let me know. Thanks!

You are making an assumption that she wants to store...

... and read medical records on the iPad just because she works for a medical agency. They may want to simply provide schedules, procedures (non-patient specific) or other non sensitive information. The iPad also provides GPS access to locate patient's homes or can access secure websites to access patient records or process trip reports without leaving any records on the iPad. Her main question was how to store and edit Word documents already on her computer, she does not say what is on the docs. It is unlikely that a Medical Agency does not know about HIPPA requirements and would not allow her and all their other coordinators to take those risks.

Office 365 and SkyDrive
Jul 22, 2013 1:28AM PDT

I have an Office 365 subscription and a SkyDrive account which gives me access to the Office Mobile app. I don't think that you can find the app from the App store directly. This allows me to edit any Office document, Word, PowerPoint, Excel by opening it up using the Office Mobile app. I have also used the web version of Office Live on my iPad to edit my documents before I purchased an Office 365 account. I just got back from a conference and took notes and updated my presentation using the Office Mobile App. It worked well. The campus network access timed out everytime my iPad went to sleep though so I had to make sure to keep my iPad awake until I saved the document. If I hadn't saved the document I would lose my changes. This network thing was frustrating.

You can definitely do this, however this is via some enterprise level solution. our company uses amtel mdm to do this and its kind of an all in one cloud app kind of thing. view, edit, collaborate but my company has it setup so i can only do it in that app (they had a guy go haywire went he was let go so i can understand)

So many different formats

Why in this day and age, can't we get all these differing formats standardized?

(NT) I doubt competing formats would be interested in this. (NT)
