Question

Can a tablet-laptop (Hybrid) replace a laptop?

Jun 14, 2015 7:37PM PDT

Hi everyone,
I need to buy a laptop (current one is done Happy) and I also want to change my tablet as well. So I came across hybrid tablet-laptops with Core i3 or Core i5 and good specifications.
Yesterday a friends suggested Surface Pro with Core i3. Can this thing really replace a laptop?

I use it mostly for office package, web browsing and sometimes a movie or series.
Appreciate your input on this, make it easier for me to purchase.

I'd had the chance to use a few Windows 8.1 tablets and will not buy such a thing. Let's hold for now and see if they clean it up in 10.

Thanks a lot Bob,
The preview of Windows 10 shows some promises. How about the technical specifications of Surface Pro, is it technically a good device and the only issue is the OS?

Thanks

The Surface Pro overcomes some issues with its display size

It's about as good as it gets in its class but it's a class I don't suggest getting into. Microsoft also has a bad track record of updating OSes on their own gear.

I'd hit pause for a few weeks. It's not that long. http://www.zdnet.com/article/i-came-to-love-surface-pro-so-why-does-windows-10-feel-like-duct-taping-my-fingers-together/ among others is why I don't think Microsoft gets the tablet right yet.

I found the Windows 8(or 8.1) Metro Apps to be outright misses. It's a shame they spent so much on those things. Here many didn't function or were so bad I started to remove them from the Metro screen.

Then I went to pair up a Bluetooth thing and it became clear Microsoft was recycling code/apps from 2000.

Answer
it depends upon usage

it really depends upon your usage. if all you do is general stuff, like surfing, email, simple games, then yes, it can replace a laptop. However, it is more convenient to edit photos, use office and other more heavy duty programs on a laptop.

As far as the surface itself - too expensive for what you get.
