Can a router act as a WAP?

Aug 31, 2004 12:04PM PDT

I just got a D-Link 624 router and I'm having a helluva time getting everything working. I guess my main question is whether or not a router can act in the same fashion as a WAP? I want to put my desktop in another room and have the D-Link G520 card for it installed. Obviously, there will be no hard connection between the desktop and the router. Should this work? Right now, I can get the router and card to connect, but once I open a browser to access the net, nothing happens.

The D-Link 624 is a wireless router so the WAP is built in. BUT your question in the subject may be not what you wanted to ask. I do not see a way to to run wireless router with WAP into just a WAP.

Some try to do this since they have an existing router and didn't know to buy the WAP. My answer may confuse you since I'm answering your question!

My bet is that you haven't updated the FIRMWARE in the D-Link 624 and maybe have not configured it yet. Since D-Link supplied configuration notes, I don't duplicate it here.

Okay, so let me clarify.
My setup is like this:
1) Cable connection to cable modem
2) Ethernet from cable modem to WAN port on router
3) PC card installed in desktop

Now, from what I understand, this should work, correct? I have the firmware update, but I have not yet installed it to the router. Configuration is done, but I still can't connect through the router as described above. Yet, when I connect a CAT-5 from the NIC on the desktop to the LAN 1 port on the router, all is good. It's very frustrating.

Firmware, etc...

My Dlink, as delivered would not logon to the ISP and the wifi clients were DOA and MIA (google.com that).

I find it very annoying that Dlink ships units that don't work out of the box.

Once you get the firmware installed, and enable the radio (WiFi) in the router, then it may go easier.

craig, I suggest you use the wizard built into the router.
1. Connect a network Cat5e cable to port 1 of the router.
2. open a browser window (IE or mozilla or whatever)
3. enter the IP address 192.168.0.1 (this is the default Dlink router IP)
4. the default user is Admin and password is blank (empty). that confuses me too i typed BLANK the first time.
5. run configuration wizard for wireless
6. take ALL THE DEFAULTS!!! you can lock it down once you get it working!
7. when done goto your PC with the Wireless card in it.
8. click START->CONTROL PANEL->NETWORK CONNECTIONS
9. do you see a wireless connection listed? if not, did you install the wireless cards software according to the manual? If not do so now.
10. once it is installed, recheck under network connections and change the IP ADDRESS of the card to 192.168.0.100 (actually the last number [100] can be anything from 1-255 but 1 is used by your router and 255 is special so stay between 2-253)
set the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0
and the gateway as 192.168.0.1 (your routers' address)
and set dns temporarilly to 192.168.0.1 unless your ISP [cable company] gave you a good DNS server address. you can get this yourself with a little searching later though.
you should have a connection.
I MUST ALSO MENTION, DO NOT SET ANY WIRELESS SECURITY WEP< WAP ECT until you have a working wireless system! Then any changes made on the router configuration for security MUST BE made at the wirelesss card too. and dont set a static WEP of all ones or zeros. or even 1010 ect. these are the first crack tries.
hope this helps
