Can a copy of a h.d. work with another indentical pc?

Let's, e.g., I make an exact image copy on my pc's hard drive on to another h.d. & I install it into another computer brand with same make & model. Will the other same make & model computer work with the hard drive made from a copy of another identical pc?

But this is dashed if we talk about what version of Windows is involved. There are little bits and pieces like the network card's MAC address, the BIOS signature and more that are used to sniff out such a move.

Linux tends to not care as much. Windows is now quite adept at crashing on the change, either for copy protection or just because.
