Camera recommendations for a digital newbie?

Oct 19, 2004 3:16PM PDT

I'm looking to buy my 1st digital camera, but don't know much about digital photography. I could use some advice on what to buy.

I currently use a Yashica T4 35mm point and shoot - very simple camera with no whistles and bells, but a great Zeiss lens and beautiful photo quality. I'm looking for the same sort of thing with a digital.

I'm thinking: around 5mp point and shoot, with the focus on image quality (focus, contrast, color) and ease of use (fast, durable, long battery life).

Any recommendations?

The November issue of Consumer Reports has a very extensive review of digital cameras. Most libraries have copies.
I just purchased a Canon A85(4MP) and like it.
My decision was based on the Consumer Report article, word of mouth and a very thorough sales presentation by a Circuit City salesman. However, be cautious of sales presentations. Sometimes they are pushing a particular line and even if they say they are salaried and get no commission you can bet there is an incentive involved.
Check on-line outlets as well. They usually include user reviews.
Good luck!
