Camera question re: wide angle lens

Sep 10, 2005 9:19PM PDT

A friend wants a digital camera with a "wide angle lens." I am assuming that she will need an SLR level camera (with such a lens) to get this. Am I right? Or do some "point and shoots" offer this feature?

If there is a "point and shoot" that can do this, will you let me know which? Thanks!!!!

p.s. I do not think she is talking about panoramic shots, which I know are available in "point and shoots."

Most zoom digicams start at around 38mm. There are screw-on wide angle lenses available for many.

Wide Angle Lenses
Sep 11, 2005 12:28AM PDT

There are several non DSLR cameras that have wide angles lenses. These are cameras with a focal length of approx 24mm to 28mm.

They are not actually classified as point-and-shoot since all of them have the most desired manual controls.

The lowest priced is:
Fujifilm - E500 and E510 (28mm)
The remaining are priced from $450 to $999:

Nikon 8400 (24mm)
Kodak P880 (24mm)
Canon Pro-1 and S60 and S70 and S80 (28mm)
Konica Minolta A200 and A2 (28 mm)
Sony F828 (28mm) and R1 (24mm)
Olympus C7070 and C5060 (27mm)
Panasonic LX1 (28mm)
Fujifilm S9000 (28mm) New, Just Announced

Hi,
Actually how much wide you want? Wide angle starts from 8mm (fish eye) to 35 mm. Please specify. You also can attach wide angle adopters to your existing lens.Say, 38 mm fixed lens will become 22 mm approx. if you use a .6X wide angle

I forgot to click on the email notification for this thread. I thought no one answered the question. Sorry!

I forwarded the list of available cameras to my friend. Thank you very much!
