The S75 was released in 2001, and most cameras at that time had a rather long shutter lag time.
All the digital cameras have gotten better in that area.
Shooting in a dark auditorium with a well lit stage, is not all that difficult.
Since you are interested in a 12X lens and also want to take some action shots, you should start by looking at the relatively new Canon S2-IS.
It has image stabilization and has a continuous shooting ability. You can hold down the shutter button and it will start snapping photos at about 2 per second and continue to do that until you let up on the shutter button or run out of memory on the memory card. That would be great for any action shooting.
Right now the Canon S2 IS is the only 12X camera that can do that........but Panasonic has announced their new FZ30 which also has continuous shooting ability. It will be available in a few months.

I'm looking for a digital camera to take pictures of my son as he runs cross country and at track meets. I also take pictures of him in plays where the auditorium is dark but the light on stage is bright. I would like one of the 12x zoom lenses and something that has a fast response when I push the button to take a picture. With the camera I have now (a Sony DSC-S75) it is slow to turn on and by the time the camera focuses my son is out of the picture. Any ideas???
