Camera for my folks

Apr 15, 2005 1:13PM PDT

I'm looking to replace my parents' Kodak DX3700. While I like the ultracompacts, size is not really an issue for them unless it's huge. Number of megapixels is also unimportant, but price is since it won't be used too often, and so are manual controls (my dad is always complaining about their absence on many digital cameras). Large LCD screen and optical viewer would be nice, as they're getting old and noone in my family had great eye sight to begin with. The Canon S30 looked ideal, but I can't find it still being sold anywhere and do not trust used electronics much.

Any suggestions?

Great rating and review from CNET, manual control options for Dad and automatic for Mom, big 30 second videos. Any comments on this camera?

Check out the Canon Powershot G2

I just realized it takes shots similar to what I was needing, but I already got a Rebel. But it's ok, I wanted an SLR anyway..

The G2 takes really good pics for a point & shoot though. And it has a lot of manual settings. Just look it up on Amazon.com and you can read the ratings and go here:
http://photography-on-the.net/gallerydatabase/index.php and search for it and you can see what kind of pics it takes.

If you can't find it for sale anywhere, check ebay, but the price looks good too.

If I had wanted a point & shoot I would have gotten that one.
