Question

Camera For Concerts - Good in low light/zoom and affordable

Apr 11, 2014 1:31AM PDT

I came across an older thread from 2010 with some great advice on some cameras that were affordable (used anyway) that performed well in low light but since 4 years have passed I thought I might ask the question again as I'm attending a concert in about a month and will be 6th row. I'd like to have something that will fit in my pocket and perform well in low light. In the past I think the low light has been a real issue.

Answer
Haven't seen much movement in this area.

While the new mirrorless cameras are out (Sony Alpha) not much has changed. Low light is a problem area and once in a while a new person to this flames everyone that such a camera is not made for cheap.

Look again at the prior discussions and find one that was mentioned.

The ones I was looking at were the in the Canon PowerShot S series. S90 seemed to be the most affordable used.

Why that shows up on discussions.

It has a 10 megapixel CCD sensor which at the time outperformed CMOS. CMOS did improve but CCD did at the time work wonders in lower lights. Even so only the newbie photographer thinks a better camera will fix bad lighting.

Smart phone

Well anything is better than my smartphone I figure which I think is 2.0 megapixel lol. I just want one that's decent enough for a concert. I just remember with digital cameras in the past at concerts in lower light settings the photos would be blurry.

Canon S90

Well I ended up getting a Canon S90 for around $50 including shipping. It's used but in very good condition and I'm hoping it will do well for me. I'm going to see Cher exactly one month from today. I'm 6th row.
