Camera decision

Mar 2, 2010 5:21AM PST

So I dont really know that much about digital cameras, but I want one that doesnt take forever to snap a picture. When my kids are laughing or I want to catch that special moment, it takes forever to take a picture with the camera I have.. I dont need all the fancy features, I just want to be able to take pics in black and white, sepia and color. I dont normally print big pictures.. any suggestions... my budget is under 300

Shutter Lag

The delay you get, from the time you press the shutter button until the picture is captured is called shutter lag.

Five years ago it was common to have a shutter lag of one second or more.
Now, the average is about 1/2 second.
But you can find some cameras with shorter shutter lags.

Here are two Canon cameras in your price range with a tested shutter lag of 0.2 second.

Canon SD780 and SD940

They also have black & white and sepia color capabilities.

There are probably a few others

But, from what I found of decent cameras you should look at the Sony H20, Sony DSC-WX1, and Panasonic TS1. They are all less than 5/10th of a second with shutter lag, the time it takes the camera to take a photo after pushing the shutter button. That time may vary in low light while using the flash.
