Camcorders

Myself and 2 children will be taking a videography class. The children are 10 and 12. I need to have manual focus, use a tripod, manual white balance, ports for an external microphone, and fairly light. I am wondering what camcorder to get to do this? I have looked at so many reviews that my head is swimming. What does someone else suggest? Thanks for your help.

My budget is not set in stone. I am willing to spend near $1000, if I need to. I want a camera to do the job for my class and be easy and light enough for children to use. With these parameters, what suggestions do you have?
