Camcorder used for still frame photos

Feb 21, 2006 3:46AM PST

I have seen the new camcorders that are also stillframe digicams. What about the quality of image capture from digital camcorders without this dual function? I suppose newer high def camcorders would be even better for this.

I have video editing software from pinnacle that will do a frame capture after loading in my pc, but my camcorder is about 10 years old. Most pictures I would be interested in would not be enalargements.

Many of the newer camcorders can produce still shots on digital memory cards. I have a two year old Sony that can produce 1 megapixel shots. The photos are OK, but nothing to write home about.

You might post a question on the Camcorders Forum if you wnat to find a camcorder that produces a higher megapixel photo.

Capturing a frame from a video with software will produce a photo that is about 640X480. It will look pretty good as long as you do not try to display it on a 800X600 (or larger) screen.

Camcorder stills
Feb 22, 2006 7:51AM PST

Just back from S.America with 2 new cameras. Canon Rebel XT and Sony Camcorder. Did scenic shots with the Canon, and motion and snaps with the Sony. No shortage of memory limiting, I took about 125 scenic stills, and about 500 snaps with the camcorder. The camcorder was great for, "What the heck," shots of storefronts, funny signs, Spanish language signs (for use in HS class), shots from the tour bus, and odds and ends at craft marts and such. I liked the Mem-stick Pro with the Sony camcorder which gave me room to shoot and shoot, and bring it all home without having to filter whether the shot was, or was not, meritorious. But no blowups- strictly 5X7 max. Good enough for the old family album, and laughs. I have also captured from video, but this is better, I think.

I'll probably opt for a faster digicam, but..

Hey ref1md,
Which camcorder are you using? One of my concerns for using the digicam function of a camcorder combo is the digicam function being too slow.

It seems a logical progression for point and shooters would be high def quality video that you could then capture some still frames (except that high def anything is expensive right now).
