Get the sony. It is easy to use and convenient. It can also take pictures. The top-model offers 1 megapixel stills, just settle for the midrange which is capable of taking pictures DCR-HC32. The low-end model is not still-pic capable. You can also look at panasonic camcorders or jvc camcorders.

Hi there, I've been sifting through camcorder reviews all morning and am nowhere near narrowing down my search. I am looking for a camcorder as a gift for my sister who is about to have her first baby -- so basically one that will mainly be used for home movies. They're not super high-tech, so I don't need all the bells & whistles -- but I'd like to get something that will last them a while. I'm looking to spend $350-$500, it can be a bit more (up to $600) if it's a Sony b/c I can get a discount.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated -- thanks so much!!
