If size is not an issue, take a look at the Canon GL2. I don't know how the $ exchange is, so you may have favorable pricing on a Sony HVR-A1.

Since we don't know what type of video you are expecting to shoot, it is a bit tough to make any specific recommendations.

Indoors or outdoors? Lowlight? Is High Definition a requirement? Documentary style or scripted movies/short subjects?

Don't forget extra high-capacity rechargeable batteries, tripod, lenses, LANC... (but since you know about external mic and headphone monitoring, you probably already know about these items...)
