Calling/emailing US from southern Italy

Mar 13, 2010 12:24AM PST

I just ordered a Verizon cell phone for use in Italy to call home. The per minute cost is very expensive and I'm looking for a cheaper alternative, maybe buying something with email and phone capability, possibly installing Skype. Also, the connectivity in southern Italy and Sicily may not be good.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

is by far the best option here.

It's free from anywhere in the world to anyone with a copy of Skype installed.

You may like that as well, in combination with some other services. Trufone is good too.
