calibration for Panasonic TH-50PX50U

Nov 14, 2005 8:58AM PST

I just bought the Panny 50U and am trying to calibrate the TV with the included Circuit City DVD. I am having trouble with calibrating the contrast and sharpness. #1, on the remote control menu, there is no contrast setting. There is brightness, color, tint and sharpness, but no contrast. I am assuming the the picture setting is the contrast, because the manual says the picture choice controls the "whiteness" of the TV. Also, the tests are difficult to understand and the host of the video doesn't explain things very well. Anyway, does anyone have any ideas on how to properly calibrate my plasma. I know that there are some calibration dvds out there to help. But, like the Circuit City dvd, I'm afraid that the explanation of the tests will be lacking. Thanks for any help.

video essentials

there is a disc called video essentials, not cheap, but explains things. Does video and surround audio system set up too, has all the test patterns you would need.

TH-50PX50U
Nov 15, 2005 8:57AM PST

So how do you like it?
I'm about to buy one.
Had you considered the 500U or the commercial version?

This certainly seems to be the TV to buy based on the reviews.

love it

I love it. I considered the commercial plasma. But I am not going to hook my plasma up the computer. And I got a fairly good price at Circuit City in New Hampshire (no sales tax) $3499. Very happy with it. The only thing I am concerned about is burn-in of logos. I mean, the cbs logo, etc, is always on the screen. Should I be concerned about this??

Good luck with it

I'm think I'm going to get the 500U.
I have, on occassion, connected my notebook PC.

That is a great price. CC by me (NY) is charging $3,799+tax 8.5%. These have been hard to get. The online stores are all sold out. I think CC raised the price.

You can negotiate
Nov 15, 2005 8:05PM PST

The price at CC was $3999, so I asked the salesman what he could for me (gift cards, etc.). He said if I opened a CC credit card, he would knock off 10%. Ok, now down to $3599. Then he tried to sell me the service plan for $600. I told him no, and he knocked off $100 more off the TV. I accepted, then the next day, I cancelled the service plan over the phone(keeping the $3499 price tag). Then I just kept my mouth shut. Next, I bought a four year service plan online for $249 which covers everything in the one year Panny warranty. Who knew you could negotiate with CC? Anyway, It was worth it to go to NH. Only a 40 minute trip from Massachusetts, where we pay 5% sales tax. Take care.

negotiated at Best Buy
Nov 23, 2005 9:57AM PST

I surprised myself last Friday when I went in to a local Best Buy to look at the 500U model as I was expecting to order it online... the salesman essentially matched the price I could get online (including shipping costs and not paying sales tax) AND gave me a $150 gift card to boot. If they want to remain competitive with the online stores they have to bargin somewhat. The only down side to the story is that I Have to wait up to a month for delivery as they are all sold out of this very popular model.

It never hurts to ask...

I was shocked, too. Glad to see someone benefited from my post.
