Does the blue end of the 80 conductor cable HAVE to go in the motherboard or will it work fine if I turn it around? It's not long enough with that end in the motherboard to reach the second device on the chain and I will have to either turn it around or get a different cable.

its best blue to mobo why cant you move device closer or buy longer 1

If you have a system that is configuring by settings the hard drives to Cable Select then you must use the cable as it is designed. If you use master/slave then any configuration should work.
