cable modem/router connection problems

Jul 25, 2004 7:13AM PDT

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop with Adelphia as ISP. Their cable modem (Webstar DPX100) works OK, but it's a rental. I want to swap it with one I purchase. Tried a D-Link DCM 202. Would not work. Called Adelphia- they couldn't solve it. Same thing with D-Link tech help. I'm about to return it, but first- does anyone have a clue what I might do to get the ISP to 'recognize' a new modem?

Also had similar problem trying to install a Linksys wireless router. Any leads to a solution will be gratefully received.

From what I know, you can't swap it. They have to activate the new one and it may take time for such to happen.

What i did when i swapped them was used the same properties(ip address, protocol rules, etc.) as the old one with the new one and it worked fine.

Feel free to ask me anyhting else.
