Cable Modem Disconnecting

May 12, 2007 12:53PM PDT

I've been having problems with my Cable Modem of late. What I'm about to say is going to sound very... weird, but it's the truth.

I have had my current Cable Modem service for 3 years or so. For the most part it has worked really well. However, there are times when it will drive you crazy.

Usually at the start of a new season (winter, summer mostly) I begin having problems every year. Usually early in the morning, and late at night it will work. Throughout the day, at around noon until later that night 9 PM or so - it simply will not work. It's like it's blacked out.

So, when this starts happening I call and report it, they come out check everything and usually always end up going to work on "the lines" and say that they adjusted the signal strength. Usually, the problem is taken care of until the following season. For example, if fixed in the summer when the temps are hot, it will work perfectly until winter time when the temps begin getting low.

Frankly, it's weird that they can't keep it working. Has anyone experienced anything like this? When I first started having problems I thought they were putting me on some sort of timer.. lol - then I made the connection with the times and the current temperature outside. It's ridiclous.

Finally, we got tired of them playing their semi-annual game of having to come out and work for a couple hours to "find the problem" when it's the same thing every time.

The symptoms I have noticed are that usually the icon in the taskbar just starts disconnecting and reconnecting many times over. (Acquiring network address) When I renew the IP, the IP Address always come out to the 192. etc (local). In the details the DNS server and Wins server IP's disapear when I renew. (When it's not working)

Anyways, I just thought I would share and see if anyone had ever experienced this and had any thoughts that the techs might have missed?

Thanks

k, but what's the connection with the weather and the signal strength outside? I don't get why the weather would affect the signal.

You could also

have a bod cable and/or connectors on the outside of your residence.

Squirrels, birds and the extreme temperatures of the cable and/or connectors can take their toll. Even a cable in the house can go bad over time.
