cable modem/AOL connection

Jul 28, 2004 11:35AM PDT

Hi all. I've just replaced a blown CNET 100/10Mbps Fast Ethernet Adapter card on my Win98 system and have not been able to reestablish a connection with AOL. I followed all the directions to a tee from CNET and cannot get the AOL software to get beyond step 3 of the connection process. As soon as step 4 shows up on the sign-on screen - "talking to network", I get a "could not establish a connection" notice. All the AOL settings(cable-modem, etc.) are matched to my working system that is sharing the hub,I've reset the cable modem, the Linksys hub is giving me all the right green lights that acknowledge the computer's presence, which seems to tell me that the hardware is working OK (??). I've uninstalled AOL and reinstalled it, and I've also installed and uninstalled the CNET drivers several times, even though that's not likely where the problem is(??). Can anyone make sense of this weirdness?? Thanks for listening

When you replace a cable modem, you get to call the cableco and they will register your new modem so it will work on their network.

I don't see if you did this.

Also, a cable modem connected to a HUB is an invalid configuration. You won't find support for such.

Thanks for replying so quickly Bob. I didn't replace the modem at all in this situation, I just reset it in the usual way by unplugging all connections and replugging. The other computer I have is running through the same configuration - hub - modem -ISP and has no problem connecting to AOL. I replaced the ethernet card on the PC in question because the hub wasn't recognizing it. The hub now clearly shows this PC's activity with all the correct indicators, but once it gets to the "Talking to network" step of the AOL process, it fails.

Sorry, I can only note it shouldn't work. You need to talk to the cableco ISP/support as to why, but for some additional fee you can get it to work (you are buying another IP address.)

Or you go get a router.

I will not be able to make this hub setup work (ever.)

Hello JoEEE,

I have a similar set-up. I didn't see where you mentioned making any adjustments to your firewall. What firewall are you using. The router is hanging at the AOL communicating with the network step. I know this because I had the same problem and I was running ZoneAlarm and I went in and opened up the entire firewall and now it works. I had to buy a second router (Linksys wrt54g). I had a D-link 624 but I could not consistently make it work. I don't know if this helps but don't feel bad. I think this is a common problem with AOL.
