Every time someone goes off the beaten path with a setup like yours, support seems to vanish.
Ethernet cards are cheaper than that first visit of the repair tech.
Go with how the rest of us set this up.

My sister bought a new laptop and the idea of making our house wireless was thrust upon me. The problem is that our desktop computer is older and does not have an ethernet port built in, so running it through a regular router would require an ethernet adaptor too.
Then, I found the Linksys Cable Gateway (WCG200). It could be my modem and router and would connect to my desktop via USB. The router and adaptor would cost me about $90 and the cable gateway would cost around $120, but I pay $5 monthly to rent a cable modem from Comcast now, so overall I think the extra money would pay itself back.
I've heard some bad things about the cable gateway being hard to set up and what not. Should I just go for that and cut my two devices into one and stop renting from the cable company, or should I just get the router and adapter and keep my cable modem? Or should I do something else entirely? I don't really know anything about this, so your help would be so appreciated. Thanks!
