"Their Software". XP is happy to set up networking with just a NIC connected to a modem. I've worked on tons of PCs set up for dial-up. I connect them (friends PCs) to my network with my NIC, set Networking, click OE, and bingo, I'm on line. Unless Cox has some proprietary software, all you need to do is let them know the MAC address of the modem and that's it.
If you don't have the correct lights on the modem, my D-link modems lights are Link - flashing, and Status - solid. Act(ivity) is flashing during data transfer.
I'd make sure I knew exactly what software they are trying to install. I installed zero software for my Comcast connection. I did install the router, but that's it. I'm always skeptical of a provider who wants to install something I may not need. What comes to mind is a branded browser. That's your call, but you don't need it.
Good luck,

use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.

Recently decided to make the leap to a cable connection, so got the install kit from good ol' Cox Communications (the only game in town). Tried several times to install the software on the installation CD. Each time it stops near the end and gives me the "cannot renew network adapter" message, along with "the installation software was unable to renew the IP address for your network adapter". Cox online troubleshooting was of less-than-no value. Basically designed for complete dvorrks (actual spelling for "dorks"). telephone conversation with one of their techs gave me the idea he knew less than I did. Coincidentally with this problem, the "cable" light on the Toshiba PCX2200 modem is not illuminated. Don't know whether I have one problem or two. But at the moment, I'm paying for a cable connection I'm not getting. Tech will be out tomorrow to check signal strength into the house. Sure hope someone here can give me some leads. The icon in the tray indicates that the modem is installed, but has an exclamation point and the warning that the status is "limited or no connectivity". Haven't tried turning off the firewall (I'm running XP Home w/SP2), because I didn't think that's the problem. Can someone give me a hand, ----- please? Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks, guys!
