CA to Offer Free Antivirus and Firewall Software to Windows Users Worldwide

Nov 17, 2003 10:42PM PST

Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) in conjunction with Microsoft Corp. today announced an offer to provide qualified Windows home computer users with a no-charge, one-year subscription to CA's eTrust EZ Armor antivirus and firewall desktop security suite.

eTrust EZ Armor -- the consumer version of CA's enterprise-class security technology -- will dramatically improve the safety of individual home PC use, and greatly limit the proliferation of Internet threats.

CA will aggressively promote this special offer as part of Microsoft's "Protect Your PC" campaign. A download link for eTrust EZ Armor is featured on the Protect Your PC site on Microsoft's Web site, located at:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/.

"The widespread embrace of PCs and the Internet has put extremely powerful technology in the hands of consumers," said Toby Weiss, senior vice president
of eTrust solutions at CA. "To ensure the safety and integrity of the Internet experience, we are making CA's powerful enterprise-class security technology readily available to home computer users while supporting Microsoft's Protect Your PC campaign."

Experts agree that the large number of personal computer users operating without up-to-date antivirus software and/or a personal firewall collectively represents one of the single greatest information security risks to users of the Internet. By offering eTrust EZ Armor for one year at no charge, CA is addressing this critical issue for users of Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Millennium Edition and Windows 98/Windows NT.

"Helping Windows customers get more secure and stay protected is a top priority for Microsoft," said Tom Button, corporate vice president of Windows at Microsoft Corp. "We're very pleased that CA's eTrust EZ Armor software offer extends our Protect Your PC program and gives customers a great option for getting more secure."

eTrust EZ Armor is a $49.95 retail value. This free subscription for qualified Windows users is available for download through June 30, 2004, and provides one year of personal firewall and antivirus protection including daily virus signature updates. Complete information on eTrust EZ Armor software and CA's free offer is available at http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft.

A small warning about virus samples...
Nov 18, 2003 2:50AM PST

Make sure you set the scanner to "report only" when scanning your samples. No quarantine area so the samples are gone if you have it set to clean/delete. Learned that one the hard way. Happy

Warning noted. I have extra copies of samples in a removable disk just in case Wink

No quarantine? Sad

Google groups search: Options if virus is found are clean/delete/rename/report only
Google web search: It is missing advanced features

Will check this Armor out tomorrow.

Thanks Keith.

The closest to quarantine you get in eTrust AV is "rename". I have mine set to "clean", not "delete". With that option, uncleanable files (the file IS the virus) have options for report/delete/rename. I have that set to "report" so my sample files aren't deleted.

I wonder if anyone knows if one wishes to try this, if they can turn off the firewall portion in case they wish to continue using ZA?

EZ uses the VET engine. ... The FW is ZA-PRO...
Nov 18, 2003 7:54AM PST

while installing it says you must uninstall any other AV ( in my case NAV) to continue.. otherwise system may crash slow restart etc (just what happened to you tahoma)
umm if u say that the firewall resembles ZA.. then i think no necessity for this EzArmor atleast at this moment .. cause it conflicts with other security softwares... free AV -> AVG free Firewall -> Kerio2X life happens to be more or less secured...

.........

I just messaged with a guy on another forum who downloaded EZArmor free. He then proceeded to go to go to Kazaa, where he knew he could find infected files to test it.

He says EZ allowed the download of a file infected with a virus and THEN warned him, after the file was downloaded, that there was an infected file on his system. I failed to write down the virus, but he said it was over a one year old virus. Then, he said it couldn't clean the file. He ditched EZ and went back to AVAST which got rid of the virus.

There was a reply to the message about reporting after the virus was downloaded - real-time monitoring was probably configured to only report, not delete. There are separate setups for on-demand scans and real-time scanning. I have both set up to scan all files but that isn't the default configuration.

I've had ETrust AV on WinME for years with AVG as the secondary (on-demand) scanner with no problems. Also have ZA free on WinME and Kerio 2.1.5 on WinXP with no problems.

I'm curios what EZ Armor can give, I installed it in my Windows XP (NAV and Panda are installed. NAV is my on-access scanner, Panda is my on-demand scanner).

I disabled NAV start-up protection before installing EZ Armor. There are options to install only EZ AV or install all (the suite - AV & Firewall). I tried the AV first Happy

Installation was smooth. Keith is correct, there is no quarantine thingy. Options are to clean/delete/rename/report only/report & deny access if a virus is found. Options to monitor files for viruses are Standard and Non-standard (non-standard as per EZ help file will scan every byte of the files)

After configuring the AV to report only if virus is found, I proceed in scanning a clean folder, then clean drive. Will proceed later for other scan test.

There are options on how EZ will monitor for viruses:
1. Executing a Program
2. Opening Files
3. Closing Files

Heuristic scanning is also available.

I believe you Happy but trust me Wink
I managed to install the EZ AV only. Uncheck it slowly LOL then once the box is clear, uncheck the EZ Firewall. Do not click on the box of Suite again or else it will auto-check EZ Firewall.
It's a bit tricky. It tricked me earlier Grin

Donna, a workaround whenever you see "No further replies to this post will be accepted. "
Nov 19, 2003 3:11AM PST

It is acceptable to do this as that is a "bug" in the new system:

In the URL (address box) of the message you want to respond to change the 5208 to 5224 and either press the enter key or click the go button. You will be replying to that message that has the "notice".

BTW...congrats on the RED M. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe you are the "Donna" that is a Mod in the Computer Help forum. She is a old time member, but doesn't post often anymore. If you are another Donna your last name will eventually be published in the forum moderators list:

http://reviews.cnet.com/4002-7600_7-5080876.html

I see "Donna" posting in several forums and sometimes out of habit think it is Donna Hager.Happy

As per The Register "CA's offering adds to free consumer firewall packages from Zone Alarm and Agnitum's Oupost firewall (our current fave)."

I have not install the firewall software that came with EZ Armor so I can't say whether the copy that I have here is with ZA Pro or Outpost. Got to find this out Wink

Nov 19, 2003 2:33AM PST

It is ZA-Pro.
I have been using CA AV for years. In that time no viral infections whatsoever. However I do not use IE or Outlook in any flavor. My OS is W98se unpatched with Windows Scripting turned off....do my computers run "clean" ? You can bet that they do but I also do not visit hi-risk web sites or use pirated software of any kind.

Thanks Gearup.

That's what I learned from others who tried it. Firewall is ZA-Pro. It's strange only that The Register wrote ZA and Outpost.
