C-Net little icon thingy problem in Firefox

May 16, 2006 9:34PM PDT

I wonder if anyone else is having this problem.

I make frequent use of the "Bookmarks" toolbar in Firefox (I'm using version 1.5.0.3), where you can drag the most-used website links so they're right there when you need them. (Little tip: you can change the text associated with each link so it's shorter, and fit more links that way. This works in IE as well. For instance, my link to the Buzz Out Loud Lounge is labelled BOLL. On my laptop I have 19 links showing on the toolbar -- there are more on my desktop computer now that I have a larger monitor.)

Each of these items has a little picture with it. I know there's a more specific name for these little things than icon, but it escapes me now what it is. Some (most) of my links have their own unique, logo-type icon. The ones that don't, have a little white page with a folded corner, must be the default icon Firefox uses for those who haven't created their own.

Here's my problem: I have 2 C-Net links on there, and they have no picture at all. There's a spot for one, but it's blank, there's no logo, no picture.

My questions: First, do others experience this phenomenon? Second, anyone know why it happens or if there's a way to fix it?

cnet needs a favicon.ico
May 17, 2006 12:35AM PDT

I believe the browser looks for favicon.ico on cnet's end. Apparently, they don't have an favicon.ico in the same directory as the page you're visiting. I guess you can suggest to the web-masters of their domains Happy to add one...

I have one

I've got a bookmark to this forum (bol) in firefox and I get the standard white 'c' in a red circle icon. (Sidenote: I've got 17 bookmarks with room for a few more ... it is amazing how many you can fit up there Wink

try bookmarking news.com

hummm, like JoshBo, my bookmark for the forums has a "C" in a red circle.

Beelisa, go to http://news.com/ (part of Cnet) and bookmark that. You should see a "C" in a red circle.

Funny that their main page, cnet.com, doesn't have a favicon... BTW, I'm also using FireFox 1.5.0.3.

tried that, doesn't work

Okay, when I go to news.com (or, for that matter, the page I'm at now in the BOL Lounge) I see a favicon in the URL field above, in Firefox. But when I drag it to my toolbar, all I get is a little white page with the corner folded down. What's different, though, are the other C-Net pages -- they have NO ICON at all. All the other pages I've got bookmarked have some icon, except the C-Net ones.

How do I fix this? Or is it beyond my control?

Even I really miss those tiny little yet distinctive icons
Jan 4, 2008 3:48AM PST

I really wish one could add these icons themselves for each and every bookmark. I have a purple-grey circle icon for the Orkut Home page which is so distinct that I have stored the Orkut bookmark simply as 'O'. Same is true of my iGoogle Homepage, Flickr.

I really wish all websites had this *.ico file....

Thanks, "Dexter".
