C drive is full..

Feb 22, 2004 12:20PM PST

I am using an IBM THinkpad 600E, windows 98 2nd edition. I have been trying to make space on my C drive. I have defragmented several times. I am unable to scan discs (computer starts to scan 10 times and then send message teling me to close windows (although all windows are closed; I have shut down the antivirus, MSN and all other possible conflicting programs. Although I have removed temporary files(or think I have) and transferred document and other files to my D drive, I am unable to remove enough files to resolve the problem. PLEASE HELP>

Try doing disk clean up, then do scan disk and defrag in safe mode. To do this restart your computer and pres the f8 keys until you see a menu pop up then select safe mode and do the scandisk and defrag.
The reason be it in safe mode is that its disable your virus protection and screen saver and any other tsr programs, don't wory when you start in regular mode it will go back to the same.
You might have to arrange icon around the way you have it before.
You didn't specify the hard drive size so I'm speculating about a 3 gig. Try this go to my computer and right click on the C: drive and select properties and see how much of the pie chart is use up.
If more than 75% is use up on the free space your cutting in to the system resource, you have a few option go to IBM and see if they make a bigger hard drive for your computer or purchase a external hard drive, and last but not least enable compression software on your computer and compress your hard drive.
It make your hardrive run a littke slower, but that a trade off you have to live with, if you want more free space. Dave

First go to My Computer and left click on C: drive, and then Properties. If C: drive is full, install another hard drive, and then move some of the files to it.

To install another hard drive, set the jumpers on 2nd hard drive to Slave and connect it to present hard drive on the same ribbon cable. If present ribbon cable does not have two connectors, then replace it with one that does. The industry has two type of ribbon cables, and so ask at computer shop for best to use with your computer. Do not go to a retail store, but instead, go to a repair shop that also sells items.

Ruckus, This Should Help Too

Please click on the link below and follow the steps (Parts 1-4). They should help you clean up the computer so the hard drive has more space, and help you run Scandisk and Defrag.

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6122-0.html?forumID=44&threadID=2966&messageID=35611

If you still can't run Scandisk or Defrag, then run them in "Safe Mode" as Bob mentioned earlier. Do the Scandisk first, then the Defrag. After opening Scandisk, place a CHECK mark in ?Automatically Fix Errors. Click on the "Advanced" button, then make sure the settings look like this:
Display Summary=Always
Log File=Replace Log
Cross-linked File=Delete
Lost File Fragments=Free
Check Valid Files For=Place a check in ALL of the options
Check Host Drive First

Hope this helps.
