Bye bye, Bayh!

Another one jumps off the sinking ship.

In a shocking development, Senator Evan Bayh just announced he would not seek re-election this fall.

His decision, which comes as yet another boost to the GOP?s no longer implausible quest for a Senate majority, upends the midterm landscape since no one was even discussing Indiana?s Senate race as a potentially competitive contest until early January. Yet, Indiana now becomes one of the cycle?s most competitive states, raising the total number of highly vulnerable Democratic seats to eight - just two sort of what Republicans need to pick-up to regain control of the chamber.

once on MSNBC on more than one program. They're not in mourning over this situation, but do point out that his resignation was poorly timed in that it precludes a primary run off (date for filing Tuesday, Feb 16 at noon, and requiring a petition with 4500 signatures). They also point out that Bayh has been a disappointment when compared with the Senatorial career of his father Birch Bayh, a pillar of the Democratic Party for many years. This brings the number of Democratic Senators retiring up to 3, as contrasted with 5 retiring Republicans.

2010 promises to be an anti-incumbent cat fight.
