Buzzing noise through Optical connection

Jun 22, 2010 5:12AM PDT

Model: Samsung Soundbar HW-C451
Connection type : optical

I purchased the Samsung Soundbar HW-C451 a few days ago, and have loved it so far. I have 3 devices I swap between the 2 optical inputs. (Mac Mini, PS3, Xbox 360). The PS3 and Mac work without problems. However, The second I turn on the Xbox 360, I can hear a humming noise coming from the soundbar (both speakers). This is not present with any other device.

I have tried 2 different Xboxs (Elite, regular), also swapped the optical cable for a known good cable, also swapped the VGA video cable on the Xbox. (we have 3 in the household). I have also unplugged all other devices in the room, including the wireless sub, to minimize interference. The problem persists.

The only other thing I can think of is the wireless router in the house. I have disconnected the wireless on the xbox, but have not yet changed the frequency settings on the router.

Any thoughts? Help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't bother

Don't bother, because if you're using any kind of cable, it should be immune to any kind of wireless interference.

Now, just to be sure we're talking about the same thing, the cables you're using look something like the example pictures here, right?

yep

Yep, Toslink optical cables. I have them running through multiple devices with no problems.

I've tried multiple known working cables (works with Mac mini & PS3) with the Xbox always resulting in the low buzzing. Tried both inputs on the speakers as well. Other xboxs in the household have the same problem, however, in all cases I'm using the VGA HD adapter. If I had the ability to do HDMI I'd give that a shot.

Thanks for the reply.

And this is the same VGA adapter you're using with both systems?

Think I may have found the problem

No, I have two different VGA HD adapters I've tried (Brother has a similar setup). I moved my system into another room/setup with an amp/5.1 system. I used the standard component cables with the toslink optical cable. Even plugged into the amp, I could hear feedback through the speakers. At this point I'm beginning to think this is a problem with all Xbox's. I've tried 3 different machines (1 Elite, last year, 1 regular 2 years old, and mine, which is an original, 5 years old).
