Buying Used Laptop-Is it upgradeable

Sep 23, 2004 1:05AM PDT

Hi there,
I'm looking at buying a used laptop on eBay, and since the ones I'm looking at are used, I can't find too many product specs on them. So, I was wondering if anyone knows if the following are upgradeable in terms of memory

HP Omnibook XE 1400 - has 256K RAM memory
Toshiba TE2000 - has 256K RAM memory

Also, I'd be open to any comments on either of these choices. I wish I didn't have to buy used, but the prices are significantly less. Details on each are below in case you're interested.

HP Omnibook XE 1400 - Celeron 1.2 Ghz processor, DVD ROM, XP Pro, poor battery, no warranty, probably will go for $475

Toshiba TE 2000 - Pentium III 1 Ghz processor, DVD ROM, XP Pro, good battery, eight month warranty, $595

Any help is really appreciated!!!
Paul

The Celeron CPU is not a great choice so I would go with the Pentium III system.

Note that notebooks only have 2 slots -- if you have 128mb in each slot you would have to take 1 out to upgrade it even if the notebook can take more.

If you go to Crucial.com or Kingston.com you should be able to put in the model # of these notebooks and they will tell you what memory they take, if they sell this memory, and what the highest capacity is (how much maximum memory you can put into it).

The Toshiba has the Pentium III full chip and at least an 8 month warranty. Don't buy any notebook with no warranty.

You can get many new HP notebooks after rebates and discounts at hpshopping.com for near or under $1,000 if you order 256mb RAM (and get your own later if you want to add more for less $) -- and that will be with an integrated wi-fi minipci card, better power management (battery life), etc.

That will be with a 1 year warranty and you can double that for free with an AMEX card or qualified Visa/MC Gold or Platinum Card (electronic warranty doubling for up to 1 year)
