My understaning is that you can buy the phone, then your friend can (and has no choice about this) activate it via iTunes later.
Be sure your friend will not mind paying the associated bill, and likes AT&T as their wireless carrier.
Plan B is to get them a hacked cell phone, but that's gotit's own issues.
Now someone who actually has an iphone can fix any part of my post that's broken.
i'm planning to buy an iphone as a gift for xmas (as anyone is giving me any, i'll have to buy it myself...)
if i buy an iphone at an apple store, do i have to sign up for the at&t contract there, or can i do it later?
will i be able to get out of the store (or have it shipped to my house) without any chip?
all my friends are going to california or colorado, i'll ask one of them to buy an iphone for me...
and i'll have to work hard the whole summer, in an always sunny and hot city in south america...
it's been some months since my last post here, but it doesn't mean that i don't watch cnettv or listen to the podcast!
(although i have missed some episodes... )
