Buying an extreme graphic card or an affordable upgrade

Hello guys,

A few years ago I built my dream computer.

AMD Athlon XP 2,6+ (overclocked to 2,Cool
1 GB PC3200 RAM
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Motherboard
ASUS v9560 TD 128M NVIDIA

My kid has the fx5500 w/256M and it does fine on DVD editing. We also have this video edit "workstation" and it has some 4MB ATI GO video card.

My bet is some video driver is outdated and not the card.

That is strange because even after updating all the drivers some programs do not recognize my graphic card or it just starts to behave strange and finally generates a fatal error.
