buying a used modem

by Scarchelli / September 27, 2014 10:35 AM PDT

Not sure if this is in the right spot. Sorry.

Is it wise to buy a used modem? I can get a used sb6141 off amazon used for $66 shipped. Or spend $86 on a new one. They have a 30 day money back guarantee also, if i need to return it.

With something like that

With something like that, there's not a whole lot of distinction between new and used. Also, Amazon tends to be pretty consumer friendly, so if there's an issue they'll likely have your back getting some kind of return processed.

Amazon sometimes sells both the OEM or black version and the white or retail version of the 6141. Do you know which one it is?
I know of two people who bought used 6141 modems from Amazon. One person got a white one and had no problem getting it provisioned on Comcast, the other got the black or OEM version and Comcast couldn't provision it because they said it had been stolen from another ISP.
I know eBay and Craigslist are two one should never buy used modems from and guess it's a toss up with Amazon.
With the 30 day return, I don't think you can go wrong.
The SB6141 is a excellent modem. I have had one for two years and it has been rock solid.
