Buying a notebook for the first time. Memory suggestions.

Aug 11, 2004 2:06AM PDT

Hello.
I'm buying a notebook for the first time to start my collge as a freshmen.
I'll be studying Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Computer Science.
After research I'm planning on buying Acer Travelmate 8006Lmi and currently am trying to reduce the cost of the laptop in anyway.

First, I want to know if my choice of the laptop would be suitable for my needs as a college student. (in general)

Second, I want to get some memory suggestions. I might ask the retailer to not to give me any memory (if possible) or take out one 256mb memory which would give me an extra slot for the new memory. Then I might get a 512mb memory else where for a cheaper price. I'm thinking about getting a memory product from Samsung and would like to get some suggestions for it.

Thank you.

Let me share that rarely does going past 512M pay off in today's XP OS. The rare item is photoshop or maybe a finite element program.

Exactly 512M RAM, dedicated video RAM and a faster hard disk pays back.

you should order 256mb and then you can easily add a 512mb for under 100 (69 after rebate recently for PNY memory) for 768mb total if you want or you can get a 256mb module for much less than Acer will charge.
