Buying a notebook...

by mattbl34 / June 2, 2005 1:52 PM PDT

I've been searching for several weeks, reading and re-reading the posts here and on several other sites without prevail. Please help me...
My needs are as follows:
CPU: ??
HDD: 40GB 5400 RPM +
Memory: 512MB + (1GB prefered)
Under 6.5 lbs
Nice screen

General Usage

What will you be using the notebook mainly for? Will you be using it to play games? Will you be using it for word processing / general productivity? etc.
I will be a student, and my major is photojournalism. Has to be portable and able to handle Photoshop with RAW format pictures, (takes about twice the RAM). Music, and all the other things everyone does with computers.

Are you looking more at a very small notebook, a standard notebook, or a large desktop replacement?
Portablity is essential. I would prefer a midsize screen, eyes arent so good these days.

Will you be carrying the notebook around a lot or be keeping it stationary most of the time?
It will be carried to classes, out when I'm working, always moving. Needs good battery life.
How important is battery life to you?

How long do you intend on using this laptop?
Several years. The longer the better.

Do you need lots of hard drive space?
I have 2 external drives now, so its not really all that important. HD speed is important.
Will you be burning DVD's or just CD's?
Burning both.
Do you tend to work with a lot of applications at once?
Several is common. Photoshop is generally always running.
Graphics & Display
Graphics are somewhat important. Not really, just descent.
How big would you like your screen to be? Do you care if it's widescreen or not?
Mid-size. Maybe around 14" would be good.
Are you willing to pay more for premium screens enhanced by XBRITE, Crystal View, or Bright View?
If it isnt too much, of course.

(If applicable) Will you be playing casual games or the latest games?
Not generally, but I do sometimes edit videos and the sort.
(If applicable) Will you be doing work in a 3D modeling program like 3D Studio Max or Maya?
No. Not really.
Durable. Durable. Durable.

Do you care if your notebook looks good or not?
Looks arent as important as durability and portability.
Are there particular brands you prefer or won't buy from?
Im not interested in Apple. Def. a PC user. Not a sony or Toshiba fan. I'm open to anything though.
How much are you willing to pay for this notebook?
No more than 2000.
Are there particular models you have already looked at?

HP DV4040

Dell 6000

HP zv6000

Several Fijitsu models and several others. Only problem I am finding is durablity and portablity together.
Please help me out.
Thanks in advance!
