Question

Buying a new laptop - Dell XPS 15 laptop

Jun 12, 2016 12:09AM PDT

Hi guys, I am considering Dell XPS 15 as my new laptop, I will be using it for my school work(uni student) and gaming. I would like to know if it's a good idea to purchase a Dell XPS 15 laptop after reading bad reviews such as experiencing blue screen and many other problems? Any other laptop recommendation if XPS 15 is not best option? It would be greatly appreciated and thankful for your reply. Thank you in advance!

Most blue screens are caused by hardware issues (Dell isn't known to have particularly bad hardware, and the XPS is their top line) or by software you install yourself (like wrong drivers or malware)
Occasinally it's a bad Windows update, but only Microsoft can be blamed for that.

Let me quote from one review as a warning: "This isn't a dedicated gaming machine, but the presence of a decent graphics card means gaming is possible, as is 3D rendering and modelling." So if gaming is your primary use (and study only secondary) this might not be an optimal choice.

Like all Dells, these machines are configurable. Important choices to make: disk (SSD, HDD; how big) and CPU (I5, I7).

I like that model line. And the awful truth is that I've yet to find any PC that never bluescreened. The only thing I've noticed is that in the past years the bluescreens have been trending down with an notable exception.

Malware, torrents and cracks. If the owner has any of those, the bluescreens are more common. So that's not a make or model issue.

Gaming features are important for gaming laptop

When it comes to gaming laptop, you can consider about other good gaming brand such as, MSI or Alienware. MSI GS series is good option as well. It comes with top-notch spec and many gaming features (Nahimic sound enhancer, cooling system steelseries keyboard and so forth), not mention it is real thin and light gaming laptop.

I don't think...

I don't think the Dell would be a good enough gaming laptop. As @Eva0621 said, I would go to MSI as well. I have MSI GE series as my first gaming laptop. I have great experience on it! It has many different and powerful performances and features! It would be a good consideration for you!

Sadly it can be true.

In fact, it can be debated if any laptop is good enough for some gamers. My son has a very nice gaming laptop with the usual 960m 2GB video system. He likes and games do run nicely on medium to higher settings.

But there are gamers that want nothing less than the full power of the dark side. That is something like the new 1080 GPU in a desktop.

Compromises must be accepted to get this into the laptop form factor.
