Buying a new HDTV, needed accessories?

Oct 13, 2008 6:49AM PDT

I'm finally giving in after 2 long years. I am going to buy an HDTV. I have one in mind, I have an Xbox 360, and I have a PS3. The only thing I need to know is what else I need. I know you need more than just the TV and a system or media player. I don't really care about HD Programming, if I get it, thats cool, if not, no big deal. If anyone could help and tell me everything I need that would be great. Thank you in advance for your help.

What do YOU want?

If gaming is your primary purpose for the new TV, then you have what you need...except for the proper cable to connect. I own a PS3, and you can connect that to your new TV with an HDMI cable. This will provide a great image. By the way, when using the HDMI cable, the PS3 has a setup option what allows the PS3 to match it's output resolution to the maximum native resolution of your TV. I don't have any idea of how the Xbox connects though.

So, for gaming, you have everything. For movie watching, buy a BluRay DVD player and connect it to the other HDMI input on the TV. This player will upconvert standard DVDs as well. An audio system can be added later.

monoprice

I 2nd the monoprice advice from jostenmeat.

DO NOT buy any cables in a retail store. They are all over-priced and almost always the options from monoprice are cheaper and better made. Just plan ahead in ordering your cables so you don't buy your HDTV and are sitting around waiting for 2-3 days while your cables are being shipped.

The biggest money savor from monoprice is the HDMI cable selection. You can get a 10 ft well made HDMI cable from them for $13, but the same cable bought in a retail store will cost you $25 to $70 depending on the brand (Monster would be the most expensive)
