Question

buying a macbook

Sep 2, 2016 3:04AM PDT

Hi All,

I have been an avid PC user and have recently had to use a work macbook, which I have really become comfortable with, I am now looking to buy a used macbook pro and then realised that there are companies out there that sell refurbished apple computers and refurbished macbook pros.

I cam across this company which is fairly local to where I live - albeit they are an e-commerce site, londonmacs.

ive seen a few computers that I feel would be good options namely, refurbished macbooks.

Im just wondering if anyone has suggestions on if it is safe to purchase a refurbished macbook?

Thanks

About the return policy and the warranty.

Search around on the web for that company name.
See if any red flags show up.

Buying a refurbished Macbook

I've bought all sorts of refurbished Apple products, but only from the Apple store on apple.com. It's a little harder to find than it used to be, but as long as you know there's a section for refurbished products you shouldn't have much trouble finding it.

The Macbook I bought I've had for probably six years and it's been great.

Depends who refurbished it.

As with any electronics, the quality and workmanship of the people who did the refurbishment is the most important factor.

Without doubt, the best is the original manufacturer and, providing the price differential isn't too great, that would be my recommendation, especially with Apple products.

That said, there are some very competent people around, we have a company near us who refurbish a lot of computer equipment to a very high standard, including Macbooks. I'd have no hesitation in using them.

As Bob_B said, check their Ts and Cs, especially the warranty and see if you can find any recommendations on the web. As an online seller, that is particularly important.

Apple Sells Refurb MacBooks, etc.

Love The Apple Store (http://www.apple.com/shop/browse/home/specialdeals) sells refurbished Mac computers, etc. with (I think) the same guarantee as new. I bought a refurbed iPod Touch and have been well satisfied with it. I'm considering buying a refurb MacBook.

Other World Computing, a.k.a. MacSales, (https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Apple_Systems/Used/Macs_and_Tablets?_ga=1.246933892.188894849.1472908055) also sells refurb Apple stuff. I've never bought a computer from them but have bought a lot of other stuff over the years. They're one of the biggest retailers of Mac stuff and I've found them to be a good company to do business with.

Refurbished can mean a lot of things and the store should supply the details. ?Will Apple cover this with their protection plan and can you purchase an extended plan? If not, does the store provide a warranty as if it were new (1 year) and can you purchase a plan to extend that protection? They should also have a return policy of no less than 15 days. I just purchased a new latest version macbook pro as an "open box". Saved some money with all warranties. Apple also sells refurbs on their website.
Personally, I'm not thrilled with MAC and I'm looking for a Dell laptop with a SSD so I can do the things I need to do because MAC is incompatible with everything I own; camera, printer, fax.
