Buying a Home Theater system

Aug 26, 2008 8:42PM PDT

I have looked over some threads but found not much relative stuff, everyone talks about many different brands. I have fairly little experience or none at all when it comes to buying a home ent. system. I know one thing, all my life I have been exposed to Klipsch speakers and Sony products. I have found interesting reviews on Denon receivers.
I would like to know if someone has the Klipsch/Denon setup, if it is the set up to go with and what other recommendations one can provide.
For example, what would be a good DVD player with this setup and would I need an additional amp?
I would like to go with the Sharp flat for sure. Do not know what dimension Klipsch speakers I need, I assume for a living room about 300 square feet I will need a 12in sub. I have seen good review on the RF-7 series Klipsch speakers.
I don't listen to much music at home, mainly watch TV/Movies but everything evolves, therefore maybe I will change my tastes/preferences.
Again, I welcome any advice, I understand the product I am looking at is a little pricey but I am willing to spend money for the good performance. This is not a day to day purchase!

Though I have not been a recent fan of Klipsch, they

definitely are high efficiency & have their particular sound characteristic. A neighbor uses the Klipsch package for his big screen sound in a fairly big great room & it seems to have pleasant sound. (He is a pro musician & so has some knowledge to base his decisions on being picky.)

But the most important thing is or you to get out & start giving various candidates a good listening to. At whatever your budget is, if willing to do the important work that requires some commitment, you will soon know striking differences in sound character among speaker makes. Importantly, you will prefer a string of A versus B comparisons. One will emerge as most pleasing to your particular individual ears. (Take some elementary notes as confusion happens oh so easily.

The first thing is how much do you want to spend?

If your budget is under $500 then a HTIB is a good way to go.
If more than $500 then pick and choose, start with your speakers about 60~70% of the budget should be for speakers.
Klipsch, JBL, Infinity, Boston Acoustics, Polk Audio, Advent and Harmon Kardon make very good speakers. A lot of sizes to choose from.
Take some time to listen to several different one before buying.
After you decide on speakers the select a AV receiver. John
