Bush Lashes Out at Democrats Over Taxes

Feb 9, 2004 2:34PM PST
I saw and heard the speech, and have not seen such an insecure speaker in many, many years! He has gone from an incredible, but unjustified, self confidence, to a broken man with a nervous smile...

You are one of the predictable few. To the vast majority (liberals and conservatives alike) he still sounds quite confident and assured regardless of whether they agree or disagree with him.

I heard one pundit on ABC say that his statement that he would win the election was his usual arrogance.

Seems a rather odd interpretation of what one would usually think of as "confidence"

If you don't think you're going to win, you shouldn't be running.

This oft-repeated line of Bush's interested me:

"There are some in Washington that are going to say, 'Let's not make the tax cuts permanent.' That means he's going to raise your taxes," Bush said at a factory. "When you hear people say, 'We're not going to make this permanent,' that means tax increase."

Restoring a cut amounts to an increase? OK, maybe, but he uses that same logic when he refers to a minor bounceback from the economic abyss as "growth." I don't know that I buy the logic.
