BUS speed; Processor speed

Jul 9, 2009 11:58AM PDT

I am looking at new laptops.

(1) Sometimes the BUS speed is given in Mhz and sometimes in MT/S; how do I compare these measures?

(2) How do I determine which BUS speed makes sense for which CPU speed?

FSBUS/CPU CLOCK

Well you could go on and on but simply put the wider the FSB and the higher the clock speed on the processor the more throughput you have at least potentially. So if you are say building a gamer and you want (potentially) the best of both worlds (though Intel is catching up) many guys go for the AMD Quad systems, wider FSB and quick clock. Liken a Dual core system to a two lane highway, liken a Quad to a four lane, more information(data) passing through. Bus and clock can compliment each other is set up properly, the higher the BUS # the better, likewise CPU.

BUS speed; Processor speed - FSBUS/CPU CLOCK

Thanks Phil.

But I am still at a loss as to how exactly to match FSB to CPU. Say CPU is 2GHz Core 2 Duo and FSB speed is 800MHz. Do they match-up? If not, why not?

Also what about how to compare the Mhz measures of FBS speed to the MT/s measures?

FSB vs CPU clock speed....
Jul 10, 2009 5:53AM PDT

Generally the CPU speed is a multiple of the FSB for those systems that have it. The latest Intel microprocessor architecture takes out the FSB by integrating the memory controller into the CPU die so that both Intel and AMD CPUs no longer use a Front Side Bus. To take your example of an 800 MHz FSB and 2 GHz Core 2 Duo, there is a possible 2.5 multiplier in that situation.

FSB vs CPU clock speed

If the FSB is running so much slower than the CPU, doesn't that limit the speed of the entire operation? If so, what is the excess speed in the CPU really worth to me?

Bus speed and precessor speed
Aug 28, 2016 10:05PM PDT

hello all ,
Right now I am trying to built my desktop computer and i have a Core I7 processor of 2.67Ghz and my motherboard have a FSB of 6.4GT/S,
NOW I want to now if they match together in order to built my computer.
thanks,

It would be best to start a new thread and not add on to a 7 yr old thread.

Identify the socket type for the cpu you have.
Then shop for a mobo that supports that socket type.
Then visit the mobo maker's site and verify your cpu is on the support list.

'on the support list'

Is that a statement or a question?
