Burning double-layer DVDs

Feb 15, 2010 10:50AM PST

Hi,

I have a laptop with a Slimtype dvd a ds8a1h ata device which is compatible with double-layer DVDs. But when I try to burn one it says it is unable to complete the formatting, and Roxio can't burn them either!
I am using Vista Home Premium SP2.

Fortunately, I have an external DVD burner that can handle them, but is there anything I can do to use the one that came with my laptop? I tried updating the driver, but it says I already have the latest version, although it is 4 years old...

Thanks,
Bo

Looks grim.

http://www.google.com/search?q=ds8a1h doesn't find happy folk. And given the age of the drive that could be part of the issues. If you are willing to risk losing this drive try the firmware that google dug up.

Thanks, but maybe I will wait a bit.... I need an internal drive, even a bad one... Happy Do you mean that if something goes wrong with the new firmware the drive is really lost *forever*?

I guess I am lucky that I have the external drive...

What I mean

Is it may help, hurt or cure. Some of these have an undo, some don't.

I downloaded it

I downloaded the file from here: http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=45154
I can open it OK, but I cannot open the .bin file or run it...
I am not sure if something is missing or my computer tries to open it with the wrong program...

Thanks again,
Bo

I have to burn the bin file and put the CD in the drive?

An apology.

When it comes to firmware and bios updates I must always defer to the maker of the firmware about how to update. The instructions are all over the map and if I did find the right steps, a new version could change that and this post would live on.

Get the instructions from where you get that file.

It was not even the right file (size)....

I looked at the LiteOn website (the manufacturer's website), and they list virtually all models but mine on their firmware page... Very strange..
So I think I will use my external drive for the moment if the internal drive doesn't do its job...

Thank you for your help!
