In cases such as your's, it's too easy (and inexpensive if you watch for "sales") to purchase a new one..In many cases, a step up to a better DVD burner might even be a bonus.
Hope this helps.

I'm using a Sony DRU710A burner, yesterday it worked fine, today when it starts to write to disk I get a grinding noise and then an error message telling me it failed to write, could my burner be going bad? thinking back I noticed a slight noise when burning but paid little attention to it, this burner is about a year old and it gets a lot of use .
