here's a recent core i7 system guide with hardware recommendations:
i'd go with a radeon hd 4980 or hd 4850x2 since both are faster than a hd 4870.
the phenom ii can only match the middle range core2quad. a q9550/q9650 is faster than phenom ii. core i7 is faster than both.
I'm planning on building a new PC from scratch, but I have little knowledge about the current technology etc. I think I'm heading down the path of mid-high end machines, I have roughly AU$2000 to spend, although if it's worth it I can justify spending a little more. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I definitely appreciate being able to play the most recent games and I don't really like being limited.
I've been doing some research and have decided to go for either a 4850x2, 4870 or a 4870x2 for graphics depending on how much the rest of the system will cost.
At this stage I think I'll be going for the Core i7 920, although I'm unsure how this stacks up to the Phenom II processors etc. I'd like to future proof myself as much as possible. Would anyone recommend other processors? Or is the 920 a pretty solid choice?
I also then need to consider motherboards obviously. If I go with the Core i7, I wont be a hardcore overclocker, so I don't really think I need a feature packed mobo.
In terms of cases, I want something that is as efficient and quiet as possible, I have a noisy computer at the moment and I hate it. Under load I don't mind a bit of noise, I have good speakers and can crank it up, but when idle I don't want to know it's running. The only cases I've been able to narrow it down to are the Antec Twelve Hundred or the Cooler Master HAF 932. I'm finding it hard to know what to look for in cases though, so deciding on them is quite tough.
In addition, any general comments, help or tips are greatly appreciated
