Bug in Mozilla/Firefox 1.5 and update...

Feb 20, 2006 8:50PM PST

with the use of SiteAdvisor and Google images.

Whenever I browse Google images...not too often... after a bit MF will crash. The first time I suffered this was when I updated MF to 1.501 or whatever the latest update is. I figured it was a bug in the updated MF so I un-installed MF and reinstalled 1.5.

I happened to be browsing Google images more intensely lately and after a bit MF would crash. It did so 3 or 4 times. Not immediately but after a little while.

I believe it might have something to do with SiteAdvisor. I'll un-install SA and see then post the results.

Bugzilla?

Did you post this in Bugzilla? Nothing like putting it where the developers can get a look at it.

and so far I don't believe the trouble lies with MF. I think it might be a combination of two extensions, SiteAdvisor and Google Preview.

What version of SiteAdvisor?
Feb 21, 2006 12:29AM PST

The extension SiteAdvisor was updated recently, so I'm wondering if that may have been an issue that was corrected, as it's working fine here with Firefox 1.5.0.1 and SiteAdvisor 19.0. Try going tools->extensions and see what version of SiteAdvisor you have, and if there is an option up update it. (It will tell you if a newer version is available.) If you are running the latest version, or updating doesn't work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the extension.

Hope this helps,
John

I'm still using the beta but I'm not...

certain the trouble lies with SA. I think it's a combination of two particular extensions, SiteAdvisor and Google Preview.

I thought I was using the beta but...

I just looked for an update through the extension menu and noticed that SA was 19.0

Here's what I've garnered so far...

I un-installed SiteAdvisor and no crashes. I reinstalled SA and the crashes continued. I also was suspicious of another extension I have installed called Google Preview. With SA still installed I uninstalled GP and so far no crashes.

Interesting...

The only known issue is with the extension CustomizeGoogle, so you may have found a new one they need to correct. I'd suggest reporting this to SiteAdvisor Inc. by clicking here. Unlike some others, they do review every suggestion and respond to most feedback.

Good luck,
John

P.S. Version 19.0 (actually 0.19) is the latest beta version...the release version will be launched in the coming months.

Done...

Issue has been commented upon at SA site. I also stated something I neglected to state here; that SA is set to highlite Google searches.

Maybe this is the cause...

SA doesn't just tag the Google search results, but it tags every link it found on the search results page, including word definitions (thing on the upper right title section) and products/books/movies/whatever else links (additional links above the real search results), which in the end made a problem with CustomizeGoogle because it made the tags out of place, since CustomizeGoogle added a lot of links to the results page.

Since GooglePreview added a lot more content to the results page, maybe this will mess SiteAdvisor up, because I think SiteAdvisor works by reading a "set template" of the Google search results page. CustomizeGoogle will mess that template by adding links, and GooglePreview will mess that template even more by adding pictures, so maybe this is the cause that SiteAdvisor doesn't work well with these extension because they may make the search results page "unfriendly" to SiteAdvisor.

Just my two cents...
