Resolved Question

BSOD Windows XP

Dec 17, 2011 6:22AM PST

For the past two weeks I've been getting the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) everyday, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. I've tried "Last good configuration" and "Restore" to a previous time.

The crash report says the BSOD is caused by a driver: VolSnap.sys. It even gives the path: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini080110-01.dmp.

When I follow the path, it's not there. When I do a Search, it does not locate it. Is it invisible? What do you suggest?

Here's the actual Crash Report:

The obvious workaround is to stop using Volume Shadow Copy. Is that acceptable?

Excuse my ignorance, but how do I stop using Volume Shadow Copy? I don't even know what it is.

It is a SERVICE

Bob has told you how to turn it off ...
Dec 18, 2011 11:01AM PST

via Services (Start \ Progams \ Administrative Tools \ Services )

While it depends on the RPC Service it has no dependencies other than Windows Backup if you are using it (and if you are you should be using something more dependable) so you can disable it without worry.

Volume Shadow Copy Disabled

Well, I disabled the Volume Shadow Copy on 12/31/11 and so far that seems to work. I
haven't had another BSOD so far. Thanks one and all for your help.
