Question

BSOD upon return from standby - new hard drive

Dec 9, 2013 2:48PM PST

I'm getting the blue screen of death when my computer comes back from standby (I haven't seen it happen at other times, only coming back from standby). I just replaced my old hard drive (because it was getting slow) with a new one on my inspiron 6400 and reinstalled windows xp. It all works fine, except when it comes back from standby. Sometimes its a KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR with STOP: 0x0...077 and sometimes I just get STOP: 0x0...0F4. I ran Chkdsk and everything on the new HDD seems fine. Any suggestions?

Clarification Request
Did you fresh install or clone from old?

I find XP to be too hard on folk to install proper. Too many drivers to find, etc.

Fresh install

Yes it was fresh install from the CD on a newly partitioned hard drive. I usually reformat my drives once every 8 months or so and I never have problems installing windows again. I think it may have something to do with how the hard drive is connected (primary IDE or SATA channel), but I can't change anything like that in the Dell BIOS.

That's a bad sign.

Let's say it was a correct install. This points to some hardware failure or change in the hardware.

To forget sleep and try hibernate. I am finding folk won't pay for diagnosis and even in a forum they details are usually far too slim. So here's the usual workaround.

Not yet.

Maybe in a few months. This issue is usually the old driver and helper app issue if not a hardware failure/change that we didn't know about.

Ubuntu is fine for getting files out but there are folk that reinstall Windows a lot and all it takes is a forgotten step or hardware change. Even using a Microsoft offered driver can cause this.

We are down to 2 XP laptops and a netbook at the office. Just about ready to move 1 out next month and the other 2 may stay in storage as it's some old system that we get paid to maintain (long story.)
