browser won't connect

Dec 21, 2005 11:39PM PST

I downloaded the latest update from Firefox this morning and now it will not connect. I turned off the firewall and still no connection. So I downloaded a couple of other browsers just to check (Opera & Netscape) and I get the same thing, "Could not connect to remote server". Internet Explorer works but I don't like using it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

1. Check to see if your ISP uses a PROXY.

2. If not, download WINSOCKFIXXP and EWIDO to affect repair and scans from each.

Best of luck,

Bob

Didn't fix
Dec 22, 2005 1:54AM PST

Thanks for your suggestion, but I ran both of those and it didn't fix. When I try to open firefox it tells me "The connection was refused while attempting to contact www.yahoo.com". I can change my home page and it will still tell me the same thing. And it's not just firefox. I tried Opera and Netscape and it does the same thing. And by the way, I'm kinda a newbie so please don't get too technical. Thanks again.

There are not enough clues presented to find the issue. You should review Internet Explorer's Tools, Options, Connections to see if they set it up to use or not use a proxy. And then use that setting in the others.

Happy hunting.

not set up for proxy
Dec 22, 2005 2:49AM PST

Neither IE or Firefox is set up for a proxy server. I've been using Firefox for over a year without a problem. But when I downloaded the latest update(1.0.7) this morning everything went haywire. Thanks anyway for your assist. I'll figure it out eventually.

I just found out that Firefox will connect in "Safe Mode w/ Networking" but still will not connect otherwise.

It's working
Dec 22, 2005 6:57AM PST

Firefox is now loading. I don't quite understand but I had shutdown Zone Alarm when I installed Windows One Care. I didn't like Windows One Care so I uninstalled it and just turned on Windows Firewall for the time being. Anyway, I just now activated Zone Alarm again and the browser is loading up and working fine??? Thanks again.

Just a note.

Thanks for the report back, but in the future it would be noteworthy to know what internet blocking software you are running.

Cheers,

Hi, I have the same problem.
Jan 12, 2006 5:57AM PST

Friefox worked just fine, then I updeted it to 1.5 and it stopped working, IE works fine. I'm using a 3com router, perhaps I should manualy open the ports firefox uses? but I can't find which one?

Any sugestions? TIA!

Hmmm... Thats strang, I once use zonealarm, but now stopped due to the routers firewall. ZA is installed but not working... or is it? I turned it on, it asked me about FF, I allowed it and turned ZA off. Now FF works just fine...
