Browser Search Bar

Dec 24, 2003 4:22AM PST

I have IE. One day, a search bar that includes hot buttons for various items (they change depending upon what I am browsing. For example, if I am on a sports page, the buttons change for sports related items). I right click on the bar and find it to be called "uooaayshstp". I un-check it and it goes away. When I browse to a new page, the bar pops back up. I cannot find how to make the bar go away for good. I have a pop-up blocker and also have run SpyCleaner, a program that removes a lot of this type of stuff. Any ideas?

THANKS!

Mark

Eeeek! All of a sudden, im feeling very worried Sad

I also have an annoying search bar that pops up everytime i log onto IE, which only goes away after i have unchecked it from the toolbar menu several times. Seeing as the poster of this thread had a similar problem to mine, i decided to follow your advice Grif and download Ad-aware. After scanning, i have results which show the words 'possible browser hijack attempt, data miner...'! Should i be worried - well i am a tad! What do i do, please help, i am a complete computer novice and know not what to do with these results Sad

SpyBot-S&D searches your harddisk for so-called spy- or adbots; little modules that are responsible for the ads many programs show. But many of these modules also transmit information about your surfing behaviour and more to the net. If SpyBot-S&D finds such modules, it can remove them - or replace them with empty dummies in case their host won't work any more with its bot removed. In most cases, the host software still runs after removing the bot. For a list of 'supported' bots see the feature lists below. Spybot-S&D works with an easy interface that allows updates by just replacing a file of about 1k size. Those updates come by my software mailinglist.

Another feature of Spybot S&D is the removal of usage tracks, which makes it more complicated for unknown spybots to transmit useful data. The list of last visited websites, opened files, started programs, cookies, all that and more can be cleaned. Supported are the three mahjor browsers Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator and Opera.

Last but not least Spybot-S&D contains some routines to find and correct invalid entries into the registry.

For information about Ad-Aware's options, click on the "Help" button on the main display page. It should help you learn about the program.

Both Spybot and Ad-Aware will remove the spyware files and entries that cause problems. If you are unsure about which files and registry entries to remove, there is an option in "Ad-Aware" to "Quarantine" the files and entries. They can be restored from the "Quarantine" folder, at a later time, if need be. I normally delete everything that either of these programs detect. Ad-Aware has a "default" setting to send offending files to the Recycle Bin. If necessary, you can always restore the files from the Recycle Bin, but I've never had that happen.

BE AWARE, some "freeware" programs, such as KaZaa, may cease to function if they are dependent on the spyware to operate. Still, it's better to find new freeware than to continue with the spyware.

Hope this helps.

Grif

Thanks everyone. I quarantined all the files that came up and my annoying search bar that has been bugging me for several months has now gone - yay!

Thank you so much! Happy
