browser keeps redirecting me

My internet explorer has recently decided to redirect itself back to my homepage (which keeps changing on its own) when I try to check my hotmail account or after I've click on 5 or more links from the same site. The site it redirects to has no URL, just about:blank and it's title is "Searching for..." I've updated my virus (Norton Antivirus) and spyware (Spyware Doctor) programs and run thorough checks with them several times. I am unable to check for updates for Windows ME because I get redirected before I can run the scan. I've fixed any and all virus and spyware problems found and I've rebooted my comp several times and I'm still having problems. I even installed a firewall thinking that would do it, but it hasn't. Any suggestions as to what is causing this and how I can fix it?
